Farm fresh to moi

Farm fresh to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I just got my first delivery and you could say I was a tad excited about it.  I might have piled all my produce up in front of the box to get a pic.  Little bit.

I'd been looking at CSAs for a while--more of rethinking what we eat, and trying to think about buying local, buying organic, etc when we can (which is not all the time, but I figure any little bit helps, right?).  I do a pretty good job eating what we grow (when Hurley doesn't trample it) and making it to the farmers' markets in the summer, but I'm not so hot when it comes to the winter time.  Plus I know that I have not been so brave about what I buy in the past.  I'm embracing this new "try everything" attitude we have about veggies, so I thought a CSA would be a good way to eat what's growing around here and it would force me to get creative.

I didn't have a lot of luck finding a good one at first, but I admit I was swayed by Jorge Garcia's blog post a while ago so I checked out FFTY.  I'm happy with my first delivery.  We're getting the Valley Box delivered every two weeks.  I will keep you updated about how it goes.

So here's what came in our first box:

2 slicing tomatoes
4 (stripey!) heirloom tomatoes
2 lemon cucumbers (yum!)
1 regular cucumber (Diva, I believe)
1 watermelon
4 peaches
1 bunch basil
4 zucchini
2 Japanese eggplants
2 Bartlett pears

One of the things I like about FFTY (besides the fact that you can cancel at any time--many CSAs require a long-term commitment) is that you can ask them not to put an item in your box again.  So if something gets to be too much for us, we can choose not to get it again.  So far, so good though.  I love everything that came!

Peace out, home slices.

  1. I'd love to do something like this, but as you already know, my husband doesn't eat vegetables. It's not worth for me alone. Maybe once we have kids, huh?
